Supported by CHANEL, Sofia Coppola&rsquo;s latest feature film tells the story of Priscilla Beaulieu, the woman who once shared Elvis Presley&rsquo;s life. In this biopic, Sofia Coppola depicts their relationship and tells the story of Priscilla&rsquo;s passage into adulthood, her quest for identity and independence.
Winner of the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and the César for Best Foreign Film for Lost in Translation in 2004, Sofia Coppola worked alongside the up-and-coming actors Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi in the lead roles.
Greatly inspired by Priscilla Presley&rsquo;s sense of style, her allure and personality, the filmmaker paid a truly Hollywood homage to her sensitive and rock&rsquo;n&rsquo;roll elegance: cat-eye eyeliner, upswept, bouffant hairstyles, shift dresses&#8230;
It was in this context, at the request of Sofia Coppola, ambassador of the House, that CHANEL specially created the wedding dress worn by Cailee Spaeny in the pivotal scene of her wedding to Elvis, reinterpreting the one Priscilla actually wore on her wedding day to the singer, in 1967. This embroidered gown is inspired by the spirit of CHANEL&rsquo;s Spring-Summer 2020 Haute Couture collection, imagined by Virginie Viard and created thanks to the joint expertise of the Haute Couture and Métiers d&rsquo;art ateliers. It is worn with a veil and a tiara, both embroidered by Atelier Montex. Other CHANEL creations also feature in the film, like a bottle of CHANEL N°5, glimpsed when Priscilla moves into Graceland, marking the affirmation of her new-found femininity.
CHANEL supports directors and institutions dedicated to the seventh art and encourages cinematic creation, continuing the links initiated by Gabrielle Chanel who, as early as 1930, travelled to Hollywood to design costumes for films produced by Samuel Goldwyn. Hollywood was at the heart of Virginie Viard&rsquo;s inspiration for the House&rsquo;s Cruise 2023/24 collection, presented in Los Angeles.
CHANEL has a long-standing creative friendship with Sofia Coppola. She regularly collaborates with the House, particularly when filming backstage at shows, such as for the 2019/20 Métiers d&rsquo;art and the Fall-Winter 2021/22 Haute Couture collections. She often wears CHANEL on red carpets. When she received the Best Director Award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled, she wore a black tweed suit with a white collar and cuffs, echoing the House&rsquo;s emblematic codes.
Priscilla premiered at the Venice Film Festival on 4th September 2023.

The film was produced by Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company, Sofia Coppola for American Zoetrope and Youree Henley. This dress combines a heavy white crêpe with Calais lace and Chantilly lace for the upper part of the dress and the sleeves. The buttons are also covered in lace. The dress took 90 hours to make.
The silk tulle veil is held in place by a little crown, hand-woven and needle embroidered by Montex with more than 500 pearlised beads in 4 different sizes, almost 50 transparent glass tubes, more than 50 silver glass crystals, and silver rhinestones. It took 50 hours of work to embroider the crown.

Sofia Coppola is an American writer, director and producer. In 2020, she released her 6th movie, On The Rocks, which she wrote and directed. Starring Rashida Jones and Bill Murray, the film follows a young mother who reconnects with her playboy father on an adventure in New York. She just produced an adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s novel Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father together with Roman Coppola. Sofia is currently working on a biopic about Priscilla Presley. She wrote the script and will direct the project, titled Priscilla, which will star Cailee Spaeny as Mrs. Presley and Jacob Elordi as Elvis.
Coppola made history in 2017 as only the second woman to win the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and the first woman to win since 1961 for her film, The Beguiled, starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell.
Coppola’s directorial debut was The Virgin Suicides in 1999 which she adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winner Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel of the same name. The movie starred Kirsten Dunst, and Josh Hartnett. The Venice Film Festival is taking place from Wednesday 30th August to Saturday 9th September 2023 in the historic Palazzo del Cinema at the Lungomare Marconi beach on Venice&rsquo;s Lido. The Franco-American director, screenwriter and producer Damien Chazelle will be President of the Jury for the Official Competition, for an edition that marks the Mostra’s 80th anniversary.  To mark the occasion, a private dinner organised by CHANEL and attended by friends of the House will be held on Tuesday 5th September 2023.
          Priscilla, the latest feature film by House ambassador Sofia Coppola, with the support of CHANEL, will premiere at this year&rsquo;s festival on Monday 4th September and is in the official competition. At the request of the director, CHANEL specially created the wedding dress worn by actress Cailee Spaeny in the pivotal scene of Priscilla and Elvis Presley’s marriage. A bottle of CHANEL N°5 also appears on screen when Priscilla moves into Graceland to mark the affirmation of her new femininity.
On Friday 8th September, in the Venice Classics section, the public will be able to see, for the first time, the version of Créatures newly restored by Ciné Tamaris with the support of CHANEL. CHANEL&rsquo;s involvement with the Mostra, which takes place within the framework of the Venice Biennale &#8211; a cultural festival of contemporary art &#8211; is in line with the support for cinematic creation initiated by Gabrielle Chanel in the early 20th century and continued by the House ever since.
Venice, a city that Gabrielle Chanel first discovered in 1920 alongside the artist couple José-Maria and Misia Sert, profoundly influenced her life and became one of her great sources of inspiration, thanks to its arts and her social encounters there.
CHANEL fashion has been under the spotlight on numerous occasions in Venice, and it was at the Mostra that important films in the history of the House were recompensed, starting with Last Year at Marienbad by Alain Resnais, a masterpiece of the New Wave in which Delphine Seyrig wears designs by Gabrielle Chanel. The film, which won the Golden Lion in 1961, was shown again at the Festival in 2018, in a restored version thanks to the patronage of CHANEL. Louis Malle&rsquo;s Le Feu follet, which won the Special Jury Prize and the Italian Critics&rsquo; Prize in 1963, starred Alexandra Stewart and Léna Skerla, who were also dressed in CHANEL.
More recently, Pablo Larraín&rsquo;s film Spencer, starring CHANEL ambassador Kristen Stewart, was selected for competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. CHANEL&rsquo;s Heritage Department loaned several designs for the film, including a reproduction of the beige organza evening gown embroidered with gold and silver sequins by Lesage from the Spring-Summer 1988 Haute Couture collection that featured on the poster.
From Gabrielle Chanel to Virginie Viard, CHANEL&rsquo;s allure continues to shine thanks to the great actresses who wear it both on and off screen, and on the red carpets of the Mostra.
In 2020, House ambassador Tilda Swinton was dressed in CHANEL Haute Couture when she received the Golden Lion for her life’s work. In 2021, Anamaria Vartolomei, wearing a dress made by CHANEL for the occasion, presented L&rsquo;Événement, Audrey Diwan’s film adaptation of the eponymous autobiography by Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux, which won her a Golden Lion. The same year, CHANEL ambassador Penélope Cruz won Best Actress for her role in Pedro Almodóvar’s film Madres Paralelas, which opened the 78th Venice Film Festival.
